STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) — The City of Stevens Point is warning of a new email scam that appears to use publicly available application and permit information to create fake invoices.
Mayor Mike Wiza says at first glance, the message appears to come directly from the city and requests payment for planning and zoning inspection fees and other associated expenses. They will then request the money via a wire transfer.
This is NOT coming from the city,” said Mayor Wiza. “It appears someone is using the publicly posted meeting agendas to scrape information about permit applications and then using it to try to scam the applicant into remitting some ‘fee’ via wire transfer.”
Wiza says anyone with questions should contact the city’s planning department to verify any outstanding balances and arrange payment.
Wiza also released an example of one email that was shared with the city. While details such as the address for City Hall were correct, the message did not originate from an official city email account, which ends in @stevenspoint.com:
