Max Scherzer looked sharp in his latest spring tuneup, working five scoreless innings as the Toronto Blue Jays edged the Minnesota Twins 2-1 in Fort Myers, Fla.
Scherzer allowed two hits, walked two and struck out three as he picked up the win in his longest outing of the spring. The 41-year-old has allowed no runs in 13 2/3 innings this spring.
Toronto opened the scoring in the second when Josh Kasevich doubled to left to bring home Sean Keys. The Blue Jays made it 2-0 in the fifth on Tyler Heineman’s RBI single to left that drove in Jesus Sanchez.
Minnesota finally broke through in the ninth on Jayson Bass’ RBI double, but that was all the Twins’ offense could muster. Starter Simeon Woods Richardson allowed both runs on nine hits over five innings of work.
Tigers 4, Phillies 4
Dillon Dingler’s two-run homer in the seventh inning erased a 4-2 deficit as Detroit and Philadelphia played to a tie in Clearwater, Fla.
Philadelphia did all of its scoring in the third. Justin Crawford tripled and scored on Bryce Harper’s single. Alec Bohm followed with an RBI double and Adolis Garcia capped the inning with a two-run single to make it 4-0.
Detroit chipped away with a run in the fifth on Dingler’s groundout and another in the sixth, setting the stage for Dingler’s game-tying shot. Tarik Skubal allowed four runs (three earned) and fanned five over four innings for the Tigers. Cristopher Sanchez went five innings for the Phillies and gave up one run on two hits while striking out four.
Rays 2, Red Sox 0
Junior Caminero drove in a run with an RBI double in the first inning and Jonny DeLuca added an RBI single in the seventh as Tampa Bay blanked Boston in Port Charlotte, Fla.
Shane McClanahan earned the win with five scoreless innings, allowing three hits while striking out four. Brandon Wehunt took the loss despite a solid four-inning start for Boston — one run on three hits — and Luis Guerrero worked the ninth for the save.
The Red Sox managed five singles — including a two-hit day from Ceddanne Rafaela — but went 0-for-2 with runners in scoring position and never pushed a runner past second.
Cardinals 4, Mets 3
Ramon Urias hit a solo homer and Ivan Herrera added a two-run shot as St. Louis built an early cushion and held off New York in Port St. Lucie, Fla.
Matthew Liberatore earned the win with five scoreless innings, allowing one hit while striking out five. Tobias Myers took the loss despite allowing just one, Urias’ deep ball, over his two innings.
Urias opened the scoring with his solo homer in the first. The Cardinals added three more in the fifth on JJ Wetherholt’s sacrifice fly and Herrera’s two-run blast. The Mets broke through in the eighth on Ben Rortvedt’s sac fly, then pulled within a run when Dominic Smith doubled in two.
Angels 4, White Sox 3
Los Angeles did all of its damage in the first inning and held on for the win in Tempe, Ariz., by halting a Chicago rally in the bottom of the ninth.
The Angels jumped ahead on a Josh Lowe RBI single, an Adam Frazier RBI walk and a two-run single by Sebastian Rivero. Chicago finally got on the board in the eighth when Kyle Lodise scored on a throwing error, then pulled within one in the ninth on Alec Makarewicz’s solo homer and Lodise’s RBI single.
The White Sox had Bryce Eblin on second base and Lodise on first as the winning run with one out in the ninth, but Jakob Guardado induced a 6-4-3 double play from Anthony Depino to seal the win and earn the save.
Yankees 3, Orioles 1
New York’s Luis Gil and Baltimore’s Zach Eflin matched zeroes for five innings before host New York claimed the victory over Baltimore in Tampa, Fla.
Gil allowed one hit and one walk while fanning seven during his five-inning stint. The Yankees broke the scoreless tie with three runs in the eighth. Oswaldo Cabrera opened the rally with an RBI single before Ali Sanchez and Kyle West followed with run-scoring doubles.
Eflin allowed one hit while whiffing seven over 5 1/3 innings. Douglas Hodo tripled in the ninth and scored on Samuel Basallo’s double as the Orioles managed just three hits.
Braves 8, Pirates 1
Jose Suarez allowed two hits and one run through 5 1/3 innings to pace Atlanta to a win over visiting Pittsburgh in Venice, Fla.
Luis Guanipa went 2-for-2 with 3 RBIs and Austin Riley hit a two-run homer to highlight the Braves’ 11-hit attack. Suarez struck out six batters, then relievers Joel Payamps, Raisel Iglesias and Robert Suarez added two strikeouts apiece.
The bats fell flat in the Steel City as the Pirates managed just four hits. Jared Triolo poked a triple in the second inning and scored on Nick Yorke’s sacrifice fly. Nick Dombkowski (1-1) entered in the third inning and allowed four hits, four walks and four runs over four innings with three strikeouts.
Marlins (ss) 7, Astros 4
Dillon Lewis’s grand slam with two outs in the seventh rallied visiting Miami over Houston in Palm Beach, Fla.
Kyle Stowers went 2-for-2 for the Marlins while Liam Hicks, Nathan Martorella and Juan Matheus drove in early runs. Starter Eury Perez fanned five batters through five innings while allowing four hits and two runs.
Astros starter Hunter Brown fanned six batters over four innings, but allowed four hits, three walks and three runs. Carlos Perez drove in two runs while Jose Altuve added an RBI single.
Marlins 3 (ss), Nationals 2
Chris Paddack threw four solid innings as host Miami never trailed against Washington in Jupiter, Fla., to collect its second win of the day.
Paddack allowed just two hits and one run with strikeouts as his ERA moved to 0.69 for the spring. Agustin Ramirez with 1-for-2 with an RBI double and two runs. Christopher Morel and Owen Caissie also drove in runs for the Marlins.
CJ Abrams and Drew Millas posted RBI singles for the Nationals, who finished with five hits. Starter Foster Griffin went five innings and gave up five hits and three runs while fanning five.
Giants (ss) 5, Royals 2
Matt Chapman cracked a two-run homer to highlight a four-run third inning as San Francisco claimed the win over visiting Kansas City in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Giants starter Adrian Houser earned his first win of the spring as he stretched out to six innings and allowed just four hits and two runs. The veteran also compiled five strikeouts and two walks. Willy Adames and Heliot Ramos added doubles.
Bobby Witt doubled in the first off Houser and Salvador Perez followed with a two-run homer to account for Kansas City’s offense. Starter Ryan Bergert gave up four runs over four innings and struck out just one.
Reds 8, Cubs (ss) 6
Matt McLain bashed his seventh homer of the spring, tied for the major league lead, as visiting Cincinnati beat a Chicago split squad in Mesa, Ariz.
A solo homer from Tyler Stephenson in the second inning, a three-run shot from McLain in the third and a two-run poke from Spencer Steer in the fifth helped give the Reds an 8-0 lead. Cincinnati starter Brandon Williamson permitted just one run in 5 1/3 innings.
Jefferson Rojas and James Triantos went deep for the Cubs. Chicago starter Matthew Boyd was tagged for eight runs on nine hits in 4 2/3 innings.
Mariners 20, Guardians 8
Dominic Canzone collected four hits, including a grand slam, and drove in five runs as Seattle stomped host Cleveland in Goodyear, Ariz.
Cole Young went 3-for-4 with two homers and five RBIs, Victor Robles finished 4-for-6 with a home run and four RBIs, and Brendan Donovan amassed three hits and three RBIs for the Mariners. Julio Rodriguez’s three hits featured a homer.
The Guardians countered with long balls from Jose Ramirez, Angel Martinez and Wuilfredo Antunez. Logan Allen was tagged for 12 runs on 14 hits in 2 1/3 innings.
Dodgers 4, Padres (ss) 3
Yoshinobu Yamamoto fanned seven in five shutout innings as Los Angeles logged a home win over a San Diego split squad in Phoenix.
Yamamoto permitted three hits and walked one. Miguel Rojas and Eduardo Quinetero each had two hits and an RBI for the Dodgers.
Ramon Laureano hit a two-run homer for the Padres. Marco Gonzales and Logan Gillaspie each allowed one run in 3 2/3 innings.
Rangers 6, Giants (ss) 5
Jake Burger hit an eighth-inning grand slam and Josh Smith followed with a two-run single in the frame as Texas escaped a five-run deficit for a home win over a San Francisco split squad in Surprise, Ariz.
Rangers starter Nathan Eovaldi tossed four scoreless innings, yielding four hits and a walk without striking out a batter.
Charles Szykowny, Will Brennan and Jesus Rodriguez homered for the Giants, who got two shutout innings from starter Spencer Bivens.
Diamondbacks 8, Brewers 7
Pedro Catuy delivered a go-ahead two-run double in the eighth inning as host Arizona overtook Milwaukee in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Nolan Arenado hit a three-run double and Matt O’Neill had a two-run triple for the Diamondbacks in a six-run second. Arizona starter Zac Gallen was pounded for six runs on nine hits in four innings.
The Brewers got home runs from Jake Bauers, William Contreras and Freddy Zamora. Jacob Misiorowski fanned three while giving up four runs in 4 1/3 innings.
Athletics 6, Cubs (ss) 2
Luis Severino produced five innings of one-run ball, striking out seven, as the host Athletics topped a Chicago split squad in Mesa, Ariz.
Shea Langeliers, Max Muncy and Lawrence Butler hit home runs for the Athletics. Brent Rooker, Jacob Wilson and Andy Ibanez each had two hits.
Miguel Amaya hit two solo homers for the Cubs. Jameson Taillon took a shutout into the fifth but wound up allowing three runs in four-plus innings.
Rockies 9, Padres (ss) 3
Bryant Betancourt belted a three-run homer and Hunter Goodman and Ezequiel Tovar each hit a solo shot as visiting Colorado defeated a San Diego split squad in Peoria, Ariz.
Rockies leadoff hitter Jake McCarthy went 3-for-5. Six Colorado pitchers limited the Padres to four hits.
Rodolfo Duran’s two-run homer accounted for the majority of San Diego’s offense. Padres starter Nick Pivetta permitted five runs (four earned) on eight hits in four-plus innings.
