MADISON, WI (WSAU-WAOW) — Creighton Mithaugen, 37, from Faribault, Minnesota, has been charged with traveling across state lines for illicit sexual conduct with a minor, according to an indictment from the US District Court for Western Wisconsin.
WAOW TV reports the indictment claims Mithaugen traveled to Rhinelander on February 13, 2026, where he was arrested. Additional details behind what led up to the arrest were not released.
If found guilty, Mithaugen could face up to 30 years in prison.
The charge follows an investigation by the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office, Rhinelander Police Department, Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation, and Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. Assistant U.S. Attorney Julie Pfluger is prosecuting the case.
This investigation is part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide effort to combat child sexual exploitation. The initiative aims to locate, apprehend, and prosecute offenders and rescue victims.
