WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — The Wausau Parks and Recreation Committee got its first look at a proposed recreation trail that would start in the former Northern Mobile Home Park in Schofield and end along Kent Street near the People’s Sports Complex.
Wausau and Marathon County Director of Parks, Recreation, and Forestry Jamie Polley says discussions with the City of Schofield are in the very early stages, but the idea was well-received by the Committee.
“I’m a fan,” said Council President Lisa Rasmussen. “We have an opportunity for connectivity between Wausau and Schofield. I think that makes sense. Any time we can provide amenities for bicyclists and pedestrians, that is very well received in the community. It is also a driver of tourism.”
Rasmussen also noted that ideas for trails like this were previously proposed by former Alder and Parks and Rec Committee Chair Pat Peckham as both alternative modes of transportation and recreational opportunities.
Alder Carol Lukens, whose district is located near the proposed trail, says she posted about the proposal on her District Facebook page Monday afternoon. Nearly all of the feedback was positive. She says it could be another way for some residents to navigate Grand Avenue without fighting vehicle traffic. “Residents have brought up to me, a number of times, how much they would appreciate a way to get downtown or wherever without having to use Grand Avenue.”
The Northern Mobile Home Park, also known as the Hidden Lakes Estates Mobile Home Park, was closed in November 2021 after it was condemned due to unsafe and unsanitary living conditions. The property was cleared in the spring of 2025, and the city has since taken it over for redevelopment.
Polley says she will continue discussions with leaders in Schofield, including Public Works Director Mark Thuot, and will keep the committee updated on the project.
