STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) — The demolition of a building at 1039 Ellis Street in Stevens Point is nearly complete.
Mayor Mike Wiza says the process provided a brief glimpse into the history of the structure, which once housed the Weber Tackle Company. “[The building] is nearly 100 years old. But it has been remodelled so many times that you couldn’t really tell where the original building was.”
Nonetheless, the work revealed some of the building’s prior charm that “hasn’t been exposed to daylight since the 1980s,” according to Wiza. “It was nice to see, to give people an idea of what the original building kind of looked like.”
The demolition crew is working to recycle or reuse materials whenever possible to minimize waste from the project.
Architects have incorporated some of the original Weber Tackle building’s designs and aesthetics into the plans for the new City Hall. Wiza expects the project to go out for bids in the next few weeks, with construction beginning this summer.
