TOWN OF LITTLE RICE, WI (WSAU) — A Hazelhurst man was killed while trying to free a vehicle that was hung up on ice during Tuesday’s round of wintry weather.
According to the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office, 73-year-old Randall G. Bernau got out of the vehicle and stepped onto the back bumper to gain traction on the slick surface. At some point, Bernau fell off the bumper and was run over by the vehicle.
The 69-year-old driver attempted first aid, but Bernau died at the scene.
Investigators say alcohol and reckless behavior did not factor into the incident, and no charges will be referred. Bernau’s death has been deemed a “tragic accident.”
