Seth Menting
WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — A Wausau man facing charges connected to a stabbing and subsequent discovery of child porn has backed out of a previously announced plea deal.
Seth Menting appeared in court on Friday for what was supposed to be a sentencing hearing. Instead, he told the judge he wanted a new attorney and requested to withdraw his plea.
Menting was initially charged with attempted homicide after he stabbed another man multiple times during a fight. He then fled the scene with the weapon, discarding it near the Wisconsin River between Wausau and Rib Mountain.
When police caught up to him, they found child pornography on his devices.
The move cancels a plea deal that called for a no-contest plea to lesser charges, including reckless injury and aggravated battery. The deal also included five counts for possession of child porn.
Five additional counts would have been dismissed but read into the record, meaning they would be considered at sentencing.
Menting remains jailed in the New Lisbon Correctional facility. A new attorney will be assigned to the case, and he will return to court on April 20th for a review hearing.
