MILWAUKEE, WI (WSAU) – Hannah Dugan, the Milwaukee County judge convicted of obstructing ICE agents last month, has resigned.
In a letter to Governor Tony Evers, she wrote: “As you know, I am the subject of unprecedented federal legal proceedings, which are far from concluded but which present immense and complex challenges that threaten the independence of our judiciary. I am pursuing this fight for myself and for our independent judiciary.” Dugan added that her legal appeals are too big of a distraction.
Dugan was acquitted of a misdemeanor concealment charge. Her lawyers have already filed an appeal, asking a judge to set aside the conviction. No action has been taken on that filing yet.
As a convicted felon, Dugan is ineligible to hold public office in Wisconsin. State Republicans had been threatening to impeach her if she didn’t step down.
Governor Evers may pick a new judge to fill out the remainder of Dugan’s term.
