MADISON, WI (WSAU-WAOW) – An 8th grader from John Muir Middle School in Wausau, Ellie Mason, had the honor of speaking and lighting “The Learning Tree” at the Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony at the State Capitol in Madison this week.
She shared her vision of the tree as a symbol of support and growth, saying, “When I imagine the Learning Tree, I picture a tree with many branches, sticking out in every direction, each one helping me climb a little higher.”
Ellie expressed gratitude for the school community, emphasizing the importance of adults who support students. “At my school, there are many people who believe in us kids. Teachers, custodians, principals, nurses, office staff, paraprofessionals, cafeteria workers, they all help create a place where students can learn and feel like they belong,” Mason said. Her heartfelt message earned a standing ovation.
John Muir Middle School Principal Angela Rodgers praised Ellie, saying, “Watching her speak with such poise was an overwhelming source of pride for me, our school, and our district.”
Ellie lit the tree alongside Gov. Tony Evers and Rachel Niziolek.
Additionally, John Muir students contributed an ornament for the tree, showcasing their creativity.
