ROTHSCHILD, WI (WSAU-WAOW) The Wausau Hmong New Year celebration is returning this weekend – bringing together families, culture and tradition.
This annual event continues to honor heritage while connecting generations.
“Nyob Zoo Xyoo Tshiab” that means happy new year in Hmong.
The Wausau Hmong New Year is one of the biggest Hmong events held in central Wisconsin, marking a time for celebration. The space soon to be filled with the smell of traditional Hmong food, colorful Hmong clothing, and lively Hmong music.
To Long Lor, president of the Wausau Hmong new year, it’s a moment to pass down traditions. “Traditionally back in Laos, obviously every single town has a new year …. every year, traditionally everyone looks forward to having a New Year,” says Long Lor, Wausau Hmong New Year President.
With more than 7,000 Hmong residents in Central Wisconsin, and over 8,000 people attending last year as the event continues to grow.
“I feel that it’s a big part of my dedication to the community,” says Lor.
