WAUSAU, WI (WSAU-WAOW) – Wausau, Wisconsin has been recognized as one of the top 30 hidden gems to live, in the United States, securing the third spot on the list. This recognition comes from a survey conducted by GoBankingRates, which evaluated housing and livability data nationwide.
Mayor Doug Diny of Wausau shared his thoughts on the housing market in the city.
“I had a realtor recently show me that our housing market is a great little spot here in the Midwest compared to other markets, so housing is in demand because people want to live here, it’s a great place to live,” said Diny. “Is it a direct result of what we are doing? I’d like to think so but I think we are moving in the right direction.”
One key factor contributing to Wausau’s high ranking is the average home value of just over $238,000, significantly below the statewide average of over $335,000. The availability and affordability of apartments also played a role in the city’s placement.
Randy Fifrick, development director with the city of Wausau, highlighted the city’s livability and outdoor attractions.
“But really, the city of Wausau is a great place to live, you look at what they talked about in there in terms of livability, affordability, and outdoor recreation. It’s a great resource we are very fortunate to have all the different things that we do here,” said Fifrick. “I love the outdoor recreation, that’s why I live here, it is just a gem.”
The two communities that ranked ahead of Wausau were North Tonawanda, New York, a suburb of Buffalo, and Lynchburg, Virginia.
