ATHENS, WI (WSAU-WAOW) – Road work is coming to Athens, which will close down part of State HWY 97 for two separate periods over the next several months. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation announced Monday the work was approved by Governor Tony Evers.
The $773,000 contract will improve the HWY 97 bridge over the Black Creek, on the village’s north-side. Janke General Contractors, Inc. is the prime contractor for the project. WisDOT says crews will replace the thin polymer overlay, replace guardrail and deck expansion joints, stabilize slopes at bridge abutments and repair concrete surfaces at piers.
Work will begin on November 4. The schedule is dependent on favorable weather conditions and construction progress.
The project will also cause a detour of HWY 97 using state highways 64 and 13 and County highway A.
The highway will be closed for approximately one month this fall, with a pause in construction during the winter. Crews will return to finish the work during the spring, at which point the detour will be put back into place.
The project should be finished by July 2026.
