WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — Wausau Mayor Doug Diny says he and the City Council are beginning to adjust to life without longtime public servant Gary Gisselman, who died in August at the age of 82.
“It was a devastating, unexpected hit to the City Council,” says Diny.
Diny says his favorite memories of Gary usually involved discussions about the US Constitution. “He was one of the only Alders who knew the Constitution better than I do. So he had some good comebacks. He was a very intellectual and smart guy. A true gentleman. He would come up here regularly and would always have a good, fair, positive conversation.
Gisselman died of natural causes on August 9th, just four days after he helped Chair a Council Committee meeting on proposed rule changes. Other Council members have filled his seat on all standing committees. Alders will discuss how to fill the District 5 seat during Tuesday’s meeting. Diny expects that it will include an application and interview process.
“I think we are past the point of a special election. Generally, those [are held] in August,” noted Diny.
The Marathon County Board of Supervisors has already launched an application process to fill its District 5 seat, which Gisselman also held.
Other topics Diny discussed with WSAU’s Mike Leischner include
Start of video- Rothschild Dam project
6:10- Warning signs near entry points along the Wisconsin River
11:50- Gary Gisselman remembrance
