GREEN BAY, WI (WSAU) — The Packers have signed Punter Daniel Whelan to a contract extension.
Whelan is entering his third season in Green Bay, having already established himself as one of the top Punters in team history. He posted a 46.2-yard average in 2023 (No. 2 in team history) and a 46.1-yard mark in 2024 (No. 3). Among players with 100-plus punts, Whelan has posted the top career punting average (46.2) and the top net punting average (40.0) in team history.
Whelan, a native of Ireland, entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the New Orleans Saints in May 2022 before being released by the Saints in late July that year. He played for the XFL’s D.C. Defenders in 2023, earning All-League honors after ranking No. 3 in the league in both punting average (45.6) and punts inside the 20 (11). Whelan finished his career at University of California, Davis (2017-21) ranked No. 1 in school history in punting average (44.0) and punts inside the 20 (86).
While the club did not disclose the terms of the deal, The Irish Times reports that the three-year deal is worth up to $7 million, making Whelan one of the top-paid Punters in the league.
Long Snapper Matt Orzech signed a contract extension during training camp and Kicker Brandon McManus inked a three-year deal last spring, meaning Green Bay’s special teams units will be intact for the foreseeable future.
Green Bay opens the regular season on Sunday against Detroit. Pregame coverage on WSAU begins at 1:00 PM, with kickoff slated for 3:25.
