MADISON, WI (WSAU) — National prognosticators are indicating that the Wisconsin Governor’s race is there for the taking.
One week after incumbent Tony Evers announced he would not run for a 3rd term, the Sabato Crystal Ball moved the Governor’s race to a toss-up, citing recent statewide wins for both parties, including Donald Trump’s victory in the November 2024 election and the success of a Democratic-backed candidate for the Supreme Court last April.
Sabato notes that the race was initially leaning Democrat due to Ever’s favorability ratings during his second term, but “in large part because of the uncertainty that can come with open-seat contests, we are moving Wisconsin to Toss-up.”
Two Republicans have entered the race: Washington County Executive Josh Schoemann and businessman Bill Berrien. Tom Tiffany, who represents the 7th Congressional District, is considering a run. He previously told WSAU’s Meg Ellefson that he will announce his decision in the next two months.
Lieutenant Governor Sara Rodriguez has announced her candidacy. Other Democrats are expected to follow, with Attorney General Josh Kaul one of the biggest names to watch.
