STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) — The man accused of killing his parents in rural Portage County on July 6th is being held on a $2 million cash bond.
Portage County District Attorney Cass Cousins says John Shulfer faces seven felonies, including two counts of first-degree intentional homicide and causing mental harm to a child. He also faces a count for being a felon in possession of a firearm.
Each count carries a repeat modifier. He faces an automatic life sentence for the homicide counts.

Investigators say the 35-year-old shot and killed his parents, Paula L. Shulfer, 52, and 53-year-old Dale S. Shulfer, before police shot him as they were responding to the scene. Officers noted that he was armed at the time and did not comply with orders to drop the weapon.
He was treated at the scene and hospitalized. Over the weekend, he was discharged and booked into the Waupaca County Jail.
Two children were also present at the time of the incident. Should he post bond, Shulfer will have a full no-contact order against them.
He returns to court on August 1st.
An investigation determined that officers were justified in their use of force against Shulfer.
