Officer Involved Shooting (MWC Radio)
STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU-WAOW) – A sheriffs deputy has been cleared in an officer-involved shooting in Portage County.
The Portage County District Attorney has ruled the use of force during a July 6 incident was reasonable and justified.
Two bodies were found when deputies arrived for a welfare check at a home on the Township of New Hope.
Law enforcement set up a perimeter around a farmhouse, when they encountered John L. Shulfer, who was armed. After Shulfer did not comply with verbal commands and raised a pistol, the deputy fired three times, wounding Shulfer. He survived the incident. Shulfer has not been charged in connection with the deaths at the scene.
The deputy who fired the shots is a 13-year law enforcement veteran. Their name has not been released.
District Attorney Cass Cousins completed a review, including police reports and body camera footage, and concluded that the deputy’s actions were necessary to prevent imminent harm. “All officer actions in this incident were objectively reasonable and justified,” Cousins said.
