
Steven Crandall
WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) – The trial of a murder suspect from Wisconsin Rapids has been scheduled for March of 2026.
Steven Crandall is charged in the murder of Christian Schauer, whose body was discovered in a rural part of Spencer in 2020.
Crandall, 27, told police that he hired three men from Chicago to kill Schaurer because he had solden drug money. At the time he told investigators that he didn’t kill Schauer, but played a role in his killing. He’s charged with first degree intentional homicide.
Crandall said he met with the “hit men” in a Marshfield hotel, and gave them $5,000 each to carry out the murder. He has not identified the killers.
Two others are serving jail time in connection with the case. Jared Carl pled guilty to first degree homicide. He won’t be eligible for parole until he’s served 35-years in prison. Audrey Benson is serving a 4-year sentence for hiding a corpse.
Crandall’s trial will begin on March 9. He’s being held in the Marathon County jail on $500,000 bond.
