WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — The City of Wausau will host the 2025 EAA AirVenture Cup race, one of the lead-up events to the AirVenture in Oshkosh.
Mayor Doug Diny says last year’s event was a benefit for the downtown airport and many businesses, and he expects more of the same this year. “They’ll be flying in from all over the country, some other countries even- some international. This will be our third year hosting it here in Wausau
Diny says last year’s pilots stayed at the Jefferson Street Inn, and many supported downtown businesses during their stay. He had a chance to speak with many of them, who praised the city and its offerings. “They love starting and stopping in Wausau and spending time here.”
Wausau is on a multi-year deal to host the event. Diny, a former pilot in the armed forces, says he plans to take part in this year’s race as a copilot.
Diny says the airport has seen an increase in recreational and business traffic in recent years and serves as a “gateway” to downtown. “It’s really a welcome mat for the city. The [updates] are probably 70%-80% complete with a grant covering about 95% of that. It’s a real win-win.”
Those updates include repairs to some hangers and the terminal. Diny says they do plan to have a ribbon-cutting ceremony to show off the updates upon completion.
