WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — Governor Tony Evers spent Monday taking a victory lap around the state after the passage of a new two-year state budget last week, including a stop at the Community Partners Campus in Wausau to learn about local programs for those who struggle with food insecurity.
Evers says the new two-year spending plan includes $10 million for food banks across the state, which won’t solve the issue completely, but will help. “It’s not enough, but it’s a start,” said Evers.
He also praised the work done by volunteers and non-profits at the Community Partners Campus including The Neighbor’s Place, which distributes food to the needy. “They have great people that go beyond, making sure that people have a good life.”
The Democrat says the amount was one of the compromises reached with Republicans as part of budget negotiations. He also discussed the importance of the $42 million earmark for repairs to the Rothschild Dam along the Wisconsin River. “We have to make sure we have a good infrastructure here in the state. That dam needs to be replaced and we were able to get it into the budget. I feel good about that.”
That project was one of the largest items specific to one area in the two-year spending plan. Federal, local, and private investments from Domtar will also be used to complete the work.
