Wausau Woodchucks
MADISON, WI (WSAU) — The Wausau Woodchucks traveled to the state capital in hopes of winning a fifth consecutive game, but came up on the short end of a 9-3 decision against the Madison Mallards
It was the first time that the Woodchucks lost a game by multiple runs since last Wednesday, June 26. In addition, it was only the fifth time this season that the Woodchucks’ offense was held to three runs or fewer in a contest.
The Woodchucks scored first in a game for the first time since last Sunday, with two of their runs coming in the top of the third. Noah Malone (Loyola Marymount) came through with an RBI single to put the Woodchucks ahead, extending his on-base streak to 20 games. Max Galvin then picked up an RBI of his own to make it 2-0. It was his fifth RBI of the season and his tenth all-time against the Mallards.
The Woodchucks held their tight lead until the sixth when Madison’s offense started to swing the game in its favor. Madison scored three runs in that frame to take the lead, two more runs in the seventh, and four runs in the eighth.
Dom Rodriguez (Arizona) would pull a run back for Wausau with a solo home run in the top of the ninth, his third home run of the season. Rodriguez finished the game 2-4, picking up his third multi-hit game with the Woodchucks.
The Wausau Ignite also lost to Madison on Thursday, with the Night Mares scoring an 8-0 victory. It was the first shutout loss in the softball club’s brief history.
Madison pounced early in the first with an inside-the-park home run from Emma Kavanagh that made it 2-0. The Night Mares would go up 5-0 by the top of the second, and proceed to go scoreless the next four frames. In the seventh, they would tack on three more runs on an Ava Carroll RBI double and then a two-run homer from Kavanagh.
Riley Stiles (Lake Forest) pitched five-straight scoreless and hitless innings in her relief appearance before the seventh. She ended the night letting up just three hits and three runs across six innings.
Wausau begins a six-game road trip on Friday, where they will take on Madison again in a Fourth of July showdown before heading to La Crosse for a doubleheader and then to Minot for a four-game series. First pitch on Friday is expected for 6:05 pm CT.
