MERRILL, WI (WSAU) — The teen accused of attacking a Lincoln Hills Correctional Officer who died from his injuries will go to trial next February.
Javarius Hurd has been scheduled for a three-week trial, February 2nd through 20th, for reckless homicide and battery by prisoners. He’s accused of beating 49-year-old Corey Proulx, who was trying to restrain Hurd after an incident with another officer.
Investigators say Hurd threw a cup of soapy water at a female officer because he felt she was unfair to him. She was treated and released from a local hospital. Court records indicate she is back to work at Lincoln Hills.
Proulx was rushed from the scene and died at a local hospital after hitting his head on a hard surface during the attack.
Hurd, who is now 17, is being tried as an adult due to the severity of the charges. His defense team unsuccessfully argued to have the case moved to the juvenile system.
Pretrial hearings are scheduled for October 10th and November 17th. A final pretrial conference will be held on January 23rd. Hurd is being held on a $100,000 cash bond.
A second person, Rian Nyblom, has pleaded guilty to a pair of felony counts for battery by prisoners and faces up to 12 years in prison at sentencing on August 6th.
