STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) — No, there was no emergency in Stevens Point on Monday.
The city’s fire department stated that the sirens went off on Monday due to routine system maintenance; however, an oversight resulted in no advance warning being issued.
“We understand that the unexpected sirens may have caused concern or confusion, and for that, we are truly sorry,” said the department in a press release on Tuesday.
Officials emphasized that there was no emergency at the time and the activation was strictly for system maintenance. There is also a chance that sirens could go off later today due to maintenance.
“We are reviewing our communication procedures to ensure that future maintenance or testing of emergency systems is properly announced in advance. Public awareness and trust are essential to our mission, and we are committed to improving both,” officials added.
