WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — A Wausau man accused in a 2023 stabbing incident on the city’s west side has pleaded no contest to amended charges.
Jason Hopinka was scheduled to go to trial this week for first-degree recklessly endangering safety and aggravated battery. But court records show he pleaded no contest to a second-degree charge last Friday.
The deal also includes a no contest plea for one count of aggravated battery. A judge then found him guilty and ordered sentencing. The 42-year-old also entered a guilty plea to one count of domestic abuse in connection with an unrelated case.
Hopinka stabbed another man in the face at a home on S 4th Avenue in May 2023. When officers arrived at the house, both Hopinka and the victim had left the scene. A few hours later, the victim arrived at a local hospital for treatment.
Officers caught up to Hopinka in the Town of Ringle the next day and arrested him without incident.
Both sides will return to court on June 10th to schedule a sentencing date. Hopinka faces up to 16 years in prison and thousands in fines.
