STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) — A Portage County man is scheduled for trial next February, accused of causing serious injuries to a three-month-old child.
David Schmies was in court on Thursday, where a judge scheduled a week-long trial from February 2nd through the 6th for first-degree reckless injury. Investigators say he caused serious injuries to the child, including broken bones and bleeding on the brain, all of which were consistent with abuse.
Schmies reportedly told doctors that the child fell off a bed while he was caring for them. But the injuries were not consistent with that story.
Doctors also observed some broken bones that were in various stages of healing.
Charges against the 26-year-old were filed back in 2022. Two additional cases are tracking alongside the felony count, one for possession of methamphetamine and an illegally obtained prescription, and one felony count of bail jumping. Those cases will have a status hearing on August 20th.
Another pretrial conference is scheduled for January 15th ahead of the February trial. Schmies is currently being held in the Dodge Correctional Institute.
