PLOVER, WI (WSAU-WAOW) – An area ice cream shop is getting into the artificial food dye conversation by deciding to move away from them.
“We like being in the forefront, and leading the area where we can,” said Ben Klosinski, Owner of King Cone.
King Cone has been in the Plover community for over forty years.
Now they’re taking big steps to transition to natural food dyes for their ice cream.
It’s a move that allows Klosinski’s kids and others to enjoy their homemade frozen dessert. “We were seeing things and seeing how dyes affect kids and whatnot,” said Klosinski. “We started looking into it, and started like, hey how do we take it out of our products.”
The ice cream parlor is still working on all their products to become free of artificial dyes, but they’ve also seen it as a challenge to find the right mix of the natural dyes to find the perfect color for their ice cream. “We have found out the turmeric, the beet root, and the spirulina to get the colors. We kind of mix those in combinations to get colors,” said Klosinski. “They are definitely more pastel-ish and not as vibrant and colorful, but again, flavor profile is exactly the same. The flavors aren’t changing.”
Klosinski adds the reaction from the public has been overwhelmingly supportive.
