TOWN OF KINGSTON, WI (WSAU) — An 80-acre wildfire in Juneau County briefly evacuated more than 40 homes, according to the Wisconsin DNR.
Officials have named it the Warthog Fire, which is burning in the Town of Kingston and Mather. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but officials note that dry conditions and high wind are factors.
Eleven engines, six tractor plows, two air attack planes, and two Wisconsin Army National Guard Blackhawk helicopters are working the fire. Homes were evacuated at around 4:30 PM. By about 7:30, officials noted that they had the blaze under control and everyone was safe to return.
Crews said suppression resources helped them get a handle on the flames, adding that they will be conducting patrol and mop-up operations as the night progresses.
The fire closed a portion of Highway 173 in addition to prompting numerous evacuations.
