WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — The Riverlife Park Concessions Stand may not be open by July 1st after the group that won the rights to set up in the building backed out late last week.
City and County Parks, Recreation, and Forestry Director Jamie Polley made the announcement on Monday during the Parks and Recreation Committee meeting, saying the family has run into a health emergency. No further details were provided.
Polley says the group will be pulling out “for the moment,” but they have not ruled out working with the intergovernmental parks department in the future. For now, she and the rest of the department are thinking “outside the box” to see what they can offer at the stand for this summer.
“[Exploring] what our capabilities are. Briefly, we talked about a few ideas, but we want to clean those up and bring those back to the committee,” said Polley.
She received the notice on Friday, May 2nd, just three days before Monday’s meeting, and too late to put the item on the agenda. She did share the news as part of the “future agenda items” part of the meeting, adding that she may consider a special meeting before the end of the month to share those ideas. Committee Chair Lou Larson agreed that it would be appropriate.
The Riverlife Concessions Stand had been run by Briq’s, but the company chose not to renew its lease last winter. An RFP process led the Parks Department to CMA Wausau, LLC, which had promised to provide ice cream treats and pizza out of the stand during the summer months.
