WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — The Wausau Police Department’s overnight shelter will open for guests this evening at First United Methodist Church, located at 903 3rd Street.
Doors will open at 6:00 PM with room for up to 50 people each night. Up to three city employees will be on hand as well, with volunteer groups providing registration and meal service assistance.
Groups that want to volunteer at the shelter should contact the Wausau Police Department directly through Facebook or by email at wmcshelter@wausauwi.gov.

Plans for the shelter have been in the works for months after it became known that the Catholic Charities shelter would move from a year-round facility to seasonal operations. The city has since issued a request for proposals for a new year-round facility.
Wausau’s plan commission approved a conditional use permit for the Shelter about 90 minutes before the doors opened. The permit allows the Church basement to host the shelter through December 31st.
