MILWAUKEE, WI (WSAU) — A Shawano County man will serve 18 months in federal prison for firing a shotgun at a mail carrier while intoxicated.
According to a release from the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Wisconsin, Benjamin Joos shot at the postal worker as she was delivering mail at 3:00 PM on September 24th, 2024. That’s when the 44-year-old fired at her, shouting “get away from my box” and “leave my mail alone.”
The victim quickly left the scene and called police. The incident shattered the side window of her delivery truck. She also suffered injuries to her arms.
Joos admitted to consuming “four or five whiskey and Coke” drinks. Investigators say his blood alcohol content was .178 hours after the incident, which is twice the legal limit. His sentence also includes three years of extended supervision and $10,000 in fines.
Senior U.S. District Court Judge William C. Griesbach acknowledged Joos’ lack of a criminal record and community involvement, but emphasized the seriousness of the offense.
