WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) – The Grand Theater has announced a new multi-year plan that will restore one of the oldest and most historic theaters in the United States.
According to a press release from The Grand, the theater is hosting an open house from 5 p.m. to 7:30 on Tuesday night to showcase a plan that has raised over $12 million so far out of the $17 million goal that the theater has set for all restorations, including adding upgrades such as new seating and paint to the historic building.
Sean Wright, the executive director of The Grand, says the restoration would make a big difference, saying, “This will be the first time that the theater has been restored since 1987, and with time and the number of shows we have each year, it’s starting to show some wear and tear, so it’s time for some new seats that I’m sure a lot of people will be very excited about…new carpets…soft goods…paint all the things and just add some luster to the beautiful old girl.”
The project will take place over the span of two years, from 2026 to 2027, allowing the theater to continue to present its annual season of shows without interruption.
Anyone who wishes to donate to the campaign will be able to name a seat in the balcony for $1,000 each and on the main floor for $2,500 each. Donors will have two lines of 28 characters each to create a custom inscription, and specific seat locations may be requested; however, specific seats may already be named.
