GREEN BAY, WI (WSAU) – The Green Bay Packers stayed put at #23 in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft, selecting Texas WR Matthew Golden.
Outgoing Packers President Mark Murphy made the selection in front of an estimated crowd of more than 120,000 fans near Lambeau Field, noting the franchise’s 23-year streak without selecting a wide receiver in the first round.
Golden, a wide receiver for Texas, had a strong 2024 season after he transferred to the Longhorns from the University of Houston last summer. He led the team with 49 receptions for 787 yards and eight touchdowns while impressing scouts during the NFL combine after he ran an official 4.29 40-yard dash.
The Packers are missing a quick receiver, as their seasoned deep-threat receiver, Christian Watson, is still recuperating from ACL surgery. Golden will also give quarterback Jordan Love a first-round pick receiver chosen by Green Bay, something former quarterback Aaron Rodgers was unable to have when he was a member of the team.
