RIB MOUNTAIN, WI (WSAU) — The Village of Rib Mountain has grown.
Village leaders recently stumbled upon information showing that an island in the Wisconsin River is actually under their control. “It started with a complaint about potential structures being built. [Someone said] ‘Wait a minute, is that ours?’ So we did some research and found out it actually is under Village of Rib Mountain jurisdiction,” said Administrator Gaylene Rhoden.
The island is located between the McFlury Bridge and where the Snake Bridge was located. It will be named Snake Bridge Island in honor of that former landmark, but Rhoden says they won’t be building a bridge to it.
“It will be a kayak accessible park, which I’m not sure we have one of those in the area, so it will be a great addition to the community,” said Rhoden. “It’s meant to be accessed by kayak or canoe, except during winter when it’s iced over, but I don’t know that we will recommend or advertise that.”
Some of the first features to be installed will be benches and a fire pit. Those will be put in place as soon as workers can get them onto the island.
Village Leaders hope to work with local scout troops to clean up the island before installing park features this summer. Rhoden says she is also open to working with Eagle Scout candidates to install additional features or displays, including some on the island’s history.
