Javarius Hurd
MERRILL, WI (WSAU) โ The Madison teen accused of lashing out at two correctional officers at the Lincoln Hills facility, leading to the death of Corey Proulx, has pled not guilty by mental disease or defect to reckless homicide.
Attornies for Javarius Hurd entered the plea on his behalf Wednesday morning. The now 17-year-old is accused of throwing a cup of soap at a female correctional officer as he was returning from outdoor recreation time, then running back into the courtyard.
Proulx gave chase and tried to restrain Hurd, but he was attacked and hit his head on a hard surface. He was hospitalized and declared brain dead a few hours later.
Investigators say Hurd planned the attack because he felt the female officer was unfair to him.
Hurd was 16 at the time of the incident. His defense team petitioned the court to move the case to the juvenile system; that request was denied in February. No trial dates have been set.
Future court dates have been scheduled for May 5th and June 19th.
Hurdโs cellmate, Rian Nyblom, is facing charges for being a party to the crime and is scheduled for a plea hearing later this month. Investigators say he helped plan the incident and gave Hurd the cup of soap before he threw it.
