TOWN OF PINE RIVER, WI (WSAU) — A 53-year-old Merrill man has been accused of his 5th or 6th OWI after a property damage crash on State Highway 64 in the Town of Pine River.
It started with an investigation into a crashed vehicle on Thursday, March 6th. Officers found the vehicle unoccupied but did find the vehicle’s registration. As they left to find the owner at his last known address, the man returned to the scene with a tractor and pulled the vehicle back onto the road.
Officers found the man driving the vehicle on Poplar Road and attempted to pull him over, but he took off and parked in a private driveway before fleeing on foot.
When officers caught up to him, they noticed signs of impairment. He failed a series of field sobriety tests and was jailed for charges of 4th or 5th-offense OWI, fleeing an officer, and resisting or obstructing arrest.
He has since been identified as Brad Hirte of Merrill. Court records show he posted a $1,500 cash bond on Monday and will return to court on April 9th for an initial appearance.
Terms of his bond include absolute sobriety and no operating a motor vehicle on a public roadway. He must also stay out of all establishments that primarily serve alcohol.
