WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — With the NFL’s regular and postseasons in the rearview, preparations are heating up for the first-year player draft in Green Bay.
While the smallest market in the league will be at the center of the event, cities like Wausau stand to benefit as well. That’s not lost on Wausau Mayor Doug Diny who says he’s confident that city will have its best foot forward that week.
“People will be stopping here, they’ll be flying in here [all of that] gets us on the map,” said Diny. “It also shows we can host smaller events that people have, or we can be a satellite [for larger events.]”
Diny says the city is one large event center and downtown hotel short of being able to host larger events. “We have the Jefferson Street Inn, which can hold a decent event but we can’t really put 1,000 people in there. If we had another downtown hotel it would put us into a much bigger category for things we could bring in here.”
He also expects some good word-of-mouth marketing to come from the draft experience, similar to the experience he had with last year’s Wings Over Wausau air show. He says nearly very pilot he talked to raved about their experience in Wausau, meaning chances are they will tell their family and friends.
“It’s momentum, it’s marketing,” added Diny.
The NFL Draft will run from April 24th through the 26th. For information on Wausau-area lodging and shuttle service, click here.
