WISCONSIN RAPIDS, WI (WSAU-WAOW) Governor Evers’ executive budget is set to be released next week. But some of his plans have already been announced – he recently stated that over $500-million will be included towards lowering child care costs and investing in employer-sponsored child care.
He was in Wisconsin Rapids Wednesday at the Wood County Head Start Biron Center to promote these plans as part of what he’s calling “The Year of the Kid”. But his visit also comes amid reports that the federal government is attempting to withhold federal funds from programs like Head Start. A judge put that on hold, but Evers is still concerned. He states “The future of Head Start is, I think, up in the air, as well as a lot of other things in the federal government. I am concerned with what’s going to happen in Washington D.C around Head Start and what’s going to happen in our legislature as it relates to child care. Both our legislature and Congress and the President are going to have a great impact on what happens going forward.”
A spokesperson for Congressman Derrick Van Orden’s office says that “Head Start was explicitly excluded from the federal funding pause, and reports saying otherwise are false. There were technical issues preventing the money from getting to them, but those have been resolved.”
The governor’s full executive budget will be released to the public in a legislative address next Tuesday.
