WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — The former Weston utility clerk accused of mishandling funds has been fined and ordered to sign a letter of apology to the village as part of a plea deal.
Court records show Theresa Coleman pled no contest to a pair of counts related to misconduct in public office. A judge then fined her $1,000 and ordered her to sign a letter of apology that she had previously written.
Coleman’s attorney said she has already paid back $21,000 plus a surcharge.
The 60-year-old was caught moving utility credits from one account to another without the consent of the original account holder. In most cases, the credits came from properties that had recently sold.
The discrepancies were discovered during a routine audit of the water utility’s finances. Further investigation revealed that Coleman had access to the accounts in question. She was fired in early 2023, and charges were filed against her in June 2024.
She previously pled not guilty to the charges. In exchange for Tuesday’s plea, three identical charges were dismissed.
