STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) — A man suspected of causing significant injuries to an infant on multiple occasions is back in custody.
David Schmies was taken into custody in late January after missing a court date last fall, prompting a warrant for his arrest.
The 25-year-old is accused of causing serious injuries to a three-month-old child. Doctors noted that the child showed a swollen head and poor color. Schmies told doctors the child fell from a bed, but they noted a fall from that height would not have caused the injuries presented.
Doctors also noted that the child presented multiple broken bones that were in various stages of healing and bleeding on the brain, injuries consistent with abuse.
Records show Schmies was supposed to appear in court on September 18th but didn’t show up. A warrant was issued for him in mid-November. He was taken into custody on January 23rd, and a judge set his bond at $500,000 cash.
Charges against Schmies were filed in December of 2022. His bond was initially set at $5,000 cash, which was posted on his behalf two months later.
During a status conference on January 27th, officials noted they are still working to find a public defender to represent Schmies. Another status hearing is set for February 17th.
