RHINELANDER, WI (WSAU) — The Wisconsin Department of Justice has released the names of the officer and the victim involved in a high-speed chase that led to a fatal head-on collision two weeks ago.
Officer Michael Bedlish was attempting a traffic stop along Highway 47 near Northwestern Avenue. The driver of that vehicle, 28-year-old Matthew Johnson, sped off sparking a pursuit.
Johnson’s vehicle drifted across the center line and crashed head-on with an oncoming vehicle. He died at the scene.
All six passengers in the oncoming vehicle sustained injuries and were treated at a nearby hospital.
The incident is being treated as an officer-involved death. Bedlish, who has four and a half years of law enforcement experience, remains on administrative duty as the investigation continues. He is cooperating with the investigation, and the DOJ adds that his squad camera was active during the incident.
