MADISON, WI (WTAQ-WRN) — Wisconsin’s Democratic Governor Tony Evers laid out his plans for this year at the Capitol Wednesday night.
In his State of the State Address, Evers said he wants to enact what he calls common sense gun legislation in Wisconsin, and that wouldn’t interfere with Wisconsin’s culture of hunting.
“No one wants to change this proud part of our heritage, and we won’t. But we do not have to choose between respecting the Second Amendment or keeping kids’ schools and streets and communities safe. We can do both.”
Evers also announced a 300 million dollar package to improve school mental health services.
“To provide comprehensive mental mental health services and schools statewide, including support for peer to peer suicide prevention programs and expanded mental health training.”
The governor also praised the bipartisan effort to offer stronger child care credits, saying Wisconsin’s working families will be seeing lower taxes this year.
“110,000 Wisconsin taxpayers will see an average benefit of over $650 per filer, totaling nearly $73 million this year alone.”
Investments to remove contaminants and lead from water supplies across the state was also discussed during Evers’ speech.
Much of what Evers wants will be challenged by Republicans in the legislature.
