FON DU LAC, WI (WSAU) – A 19-year-old from Menasha was arrested by the Fond du Lac Police Department on Sunday morning on suspicion of setting fire to a building that was leased to Republican U.S. Congressman Glenn Grothman.
According to a statement by the department, officers from the Fond du Lac Police Department and the City of Fond du Lac Fire Rescue responded to a structure fire at 525 N. Peters Avenue at around 1:02 a.m., the department said in a statement. Before firefighters could respond, officers from the Fond du Lac Police Department utilized fire extinguishers to contain the flames. The building was unoccupied at the time, and no injuries were reported.
The suspect was found not long afterward at a nearby strip mall and admitted to officers that he started the fire due to the law that caused the Chinese social media platform TikTok to either sell to a U.S. company or be banned going into effect on Saturday night.
“We are relieved that no one was injured and the office was unoccupied at the time of the fire. Acts of violence, in any form, are not tolerated, and we remain committed to protecting the safety and well-being of our community. I am thankful for the swift response of our officers in helping knock down the fire and also locating the suspect of this arson,” Chief Aaron Goldstein said.
The Fond du Lac County District Attorney’s Office has charged the suspect, who is being held in the Fond du Lac County Jail, with arson. When a criminal complaint is filed, more information is expected to become available.
