TOWN OF NEWBOLD, WI (WSAU) — What started as an attempted traffic stop ended with a deadly head-on collision on Highway 47 in Oneida County late Friday night.
The Wisconsin Department of Justice says officers were attempting a stop at around 9:15 PM on Highway 47 near Northwestern Avenue. The vehicle sped up, leading to a pursuit.
The chase ended when the vehicle crossed the center line and collided head-on with another carrying six passengers.
All six occupants suffered injuries and were transported to local hospitals for treatment. Officers attempted life-saving measures on the driver of the fleeing vehicle, but they died at the scene.
The incident is being treated as an officer-involved death and all involved have been placed on administrative leave and are cooperating with the investigation. All officers had their squad cameras active during the incident.
No further information has been released including why officers were trying to stop the vehicle. The name of the deceased victim is being withheld, pending family notification.
The incident closed a portion of Highway 47 for nearly five hours, according to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.
