LOYAL, WI (WSAU-WAOW) – Many rural schools around the area are seeing a decrease in enrollment numbers.
That’s no different at Loyal and Greenwood who are considering merging the two school districts.
“Wherever this goes on April 1st, I believe we still need to continue working together,” said Chris Lindner, Superintendent at the Loyal School District.
The schools are struggling to fill classes as well as teachers.
The school boards adding an advisory vote to April’s election to gauge the public’s interest in merging.
“In our county and across the state, you’re looking at I believe 80% of our districts are in declining enrollment mode,” added Lindner. “That’s revenue every year that you are not getting, so this is another reason why we are looking at not only collaboration, but consolidation of how can we be more efficient with our tax payers money.”
The vote in April will not decide whether the merger will happen or not, however, the two schools have been collaborating for some time and it’s lead to more talks of consolidation.
The two schools are in the very early planning stages, and they say will work on details once they have a good gauge on where the community stands.
