KRONENWETTER, WI (WSAU) — Planners in Kronenwetter have turned aside two proposed sand and gravel mines along Kowalski Road, but Village President and Interim Administrator Chris Voll says the discussion about the proposals will likely continue for months.
“[One company] has already filed a suit against us, so that will be heard in Marathon County sometime in the near future,” said Voll.
That company was looking to mine on land located on the north side of the road. A second company petitioned the Village for land on the south side, they were shut down at a recent Village Plan Commission meeting but Voll says they also have options. “They can apply for an appeal to the Village Board, they could file a lawsuit, or they could just do nothing and let the project die.”
Voll says the land is desirable because its sandy texture makes a good filler for highway and road projects. But the land was recently moved out of a floodplain and sits in a tax increment district, making it ripe for development. “Now that it’s out of the floodplain it has become a little more desirable. Both pieces of property are also in a Tax Increment District. So based on those changes these properties might be more advantageous for other developments besides an open pit mine.”
He says residents who are concerned about the proposals should keep their eye on the legal proceedings for updates.
