MARSHFIELD, WI (WSAU) — Firefighters in Marshfield say working smoke detectors likely prevented a house fire from becoming much larger than it was on Tuesday.
Crews were called to a home on North Maple Avenue at about 1:00 PM for a report of heavy smoke coming from the basement. One crew worked to extinguish the flames while another checked for trapped occupants.
All residents were accounted for at a neighbor’s house. Crews say early detection from a working smoke detector allowed them to get out quickly and call for help. That allowed crews to contain the fire in the basement of the home.
Moderate smoke, fire, and water damage occurred in the basement. Some smoke damage was reported throughout the first floor of the home as well.
Crews worked for just over 75 minutes to clear the scene. No occupants or firefighters were injured. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
