WISCONSIN RAPIDS, WI (WSAU) — Wisconsin Rapids Mayor Matt Zacher is looking to bring new blood into local government.
The first-term Mayor is looking for local people who want to serve on the Parks and Rec Commission, Zoning Board of Appeals, and the Board of Review. He says some might say those spots go to those who happen to be in the so-called “good ole’ boys club,” but everyone is welcome.
“It’s just people like us in the community that get together to listen, understand, and make decisions,” said Zacher. “So if you are from Wisconsin Rapids call in to [City Hall] and tell them you want to be a part of a board or a commission.”
Zacher says there may be a misconception that only those in the Mayor’s inner circle get to serve on those boards or commissions, but that’s not the case. There have been times when he’s had to call around to fill vacancies, but he would rather choose from a pool of interested applicants. “The way our government is designed is we, the people, run our government. If you don’t like how the people in there are doing it, you vote them out.
“I only know limited people. I will run out of people [who want to serve] at some point,” added Zacher.
He notes some positions will meet just a few times a year, others meet monthly. Most will also involve some outside work like phone calls or reading to understand the agenda items and make an informed decision.
Those interested should fill out the application found on the city’s website. Click here for more information and all current board and commission vacancies.
