(WTAQ) — Voters across the state of Wisconsin have approved the sole statewide referendum on the ballot.
Most Wisconsinites did decide that the state constitution should be reworded so that “ONLY” U.S. Citizens are allowed to vote. The previous wording was that “EVERY” U.S. citizen is eligible to vote. Bill Osmulski with the MacIver Institute says some people were confused.
“This is one where I’ve got a lot of questions too,” Osmulski said on WTAQ. “It seems like such a basic thing that’s already the law.”
Osmulski admits that non-citizen voting in US elections is rare, but says the referendum closes what he calls a “loophole”.
“It’s important to close this loophole. It’s something nobody ever thought we’d ever have to do,” “The framers of the Wisconsin constitution didn’t think [about this]. The idea of foreigners voting in U.S. elections is a new idea.”
The District of Columbia and municipalities in California, Maryland and Vermont have passed measures allowing non-citizens to vote in local elections.
Similar amendments were on the ballot in seven other states. Republicans overwhelmingly supported the referendum, while Democrats urged supporters to vote against it.
