MADISON, WI (WSAU) — A Weston man will serve three years in federal prison for being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm.
Shawn Hignite Sr was sentenced last week in US District Court for Western Wisconsin after police responded to his home back in January for a report of shots fired. Initially, Highnite denied there was a gunshot during the incident. But after obtaining a search warrant investigators found a handgun and spent shell casing in the backyard.
Highnite then admitted that he fired off a round during an argument at the home.
The 50-year-old will also spend three years on extended supervision following his release from federal prison.
At sentencing, District Judge William Conley acknowledged the dismal history of Hignite consuming alcohol and committing crimes. He noted that Hignite’s last 30 years “have been plagued by poor decision-making with either a fascination or compulsion with possessing firearms.” Judge Conley expressed disappointment with the pattern of firearms being present in each of Hignite’s prior offenses.
The incident in question occurred on January 30th. Hignite was arrested a day later and pled guilty to the charge in federal court on August 1st.
