STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) — A Stevens Point man charged with attempted homicide has avoided a jury trial after pleading no contest to the charge.
Frank Jackson made the plea on Tuesday in a Portage County courtroom. A judge then found him guilty and ordered a presentence investigation.
In exchange for the plea a handful of other counts were dismissed but read into the record. Those included aggravated battery and physical abuse of an elderly person. A misdemeanor for obstructing an officer was also dismissed but read into the record.
The 30-year-old stabbed the victim after confronting him at the downtown Stevens Point library. Witnesses said Jackson had borrowed money from the victim earlier in the day, which he used to purchase alcohol. He returned for another loan a few hours later but was denied.
That’s when he became confrontational and was kicked out of the library. He returned with a knife and confronted the victim again outside the library, stabbing him in the abdomen. The victim, identified as a 71-year-old man, survived with just a punctured lung.
Jackson, who has no listed address, is being held on a $1 million bond. A sentencing hearing has been scheduled for January 31st with only the possibility of parole to be discussed that day.
